How is hair removed by laser?
The laser emits a powerful beam of light that passes harmlessly through the skin, but is absorbed by the hair follicle. By selectively absorbing the laser energy, the hair follicles are disabled, impairing their ability to grow hair making your skin hair free.
This is a safer, faster and more effective way to eliminate unwanted hair than traditional methods such as waxing or IPL. Laser hair removal is most effective when the hair colour is significantly darker than the skin, e.g. dark hair on fair-skinned individuals, or black hair on darker skin colours.
The advantages of laser hair removal
- Fewer treatments required than with IPL hair removal;
- Suitable for large areas;
- More accurate (unlike electrolysis, laser light can’t ‘miss’ the follicle);
- Non-invasive (no risk of needle-transmitted disease).
Laser treatment provides long-term hair removal for large or small areas, without the difficulties or commitment involved with other methods. The laser is designed to selectively treat only the hair follicle, leaving the surrounding tissue unaffected. The laser uses pulses of light to remove the hair, so there is little irritation to the skin. Your skin will become silky smooth and hair free.
What does my skin look like after the treatment?
You may experience mild redness and warmth after the treatment, which for most people only lasts an hour or two. For some the redness may last a day or so. We apply a soothing lotion onto your skin after treatment and additional cooling where necessary. If you have laser hair removal on your face sunscreen and natural minerals are applied to protect your skin from the sun and to even out any redness. No one will be able to discern that you have had a laser treatment if you return to work immediately after the procedure.
The treatment consists of a number of laser pulses accompanied by a tingling or slight burning sensation. For your comfort during the procedure the treatment area can be cooled before, during and after treatment using our medical grade cryogen device.
How long does it take?
Each laser pulse treats about a half-inch area, which can contain ten or more hairs. The amount of time needed depends on the size of the area to be treated. The lip usually takes less than a minute; other areas such as the leg take significantly longer.
How many treatments will be necessary?
The laser works by affecting the hair follicles, which are in the growing (anagen) phase. At any time, some hair follicles are in the resting (telogen) phase and won’t be treated by the laser. Therefore several visits may be necessary for total treatment.
What do I do before a consultation or treatment?
Do not wax or pluck the area to be treated for one month prior to laser hair removal. Instead you can shave the area. Stop shaving three days prior to your consultation or before a laser hair removal treatment.
Can I have my treatment on the day of the consultation?
Please request this at the time of booking. If the treatment area is large we may need to make an alternative time for the treatment. In some circumstances, e.g. if you have a darker skin the nurse may need to assess the effect of the test patch before proceeding with the full treatment.
About the consultation
A consultation with one of our specialist nurses/clinicians is required to determine your suitability for the treatment. Information about the treatment, cost involved and a free test patch will be provided as long as it is safe for you to do treatments.
What should you do if you are not well?
A consultation or treatment cannot be undertaken if you are ill or have active cold sores. Illnesses include fever, cough, sore throat, aches, headaches, chills, diarrhea/vomiting and tiredness. Please call to reschedule or discuss your circumstances.
