Acne treatment at the Laser Skin Clinic
Here at the Laser Skin Clinic we’ve been researching new methods to treat acne. The problem with many acne treatments we’ve looked into is that they were either too strong (resulting in severe side-effects and downtime) or ineffective. Whilst people with very resilient and undesirable acne may have accepted the side-effects of medication and harsh treatments most do not really want to compromise their health or go through a period of irritated and even worse looking skin.
We needed a treatment regime that would help everyone! Something that would provide relief for the most severe cases but something that wouldn’t scare people off. There had to be an answer right? Well, with something like acne a single treatment solution just didn’t seem suitable for the issue. After all whilst acne may be stimulated by hormonal changes it goes beyond that, as you’d know if you’ve seen a Doctor for the issue they’ve probably prescribed oral and topical medication, which can come with unwanted side-effects.
We started to trial a combination of treatments, each of which would be tailored to attack the acne in different ways.
First, we begun with a relatively new treatment, the Carbon Laser Peel also called China Doll Peel, a treatment which targets the lasers energy straight into the pores. Unlike more traditional laser treatments that have had varying, but somewhat disappointing results with acne, the Carbon Laser Peel uses a technique in which a charcoal mask is applied to the patients face which is then followed by laser. The charcoal works to attract the laser light and draw the energy into the pores, absorbing all the nasties in your skin. This technique provided a revolutionary method for destroying the bacteria right inside the pores.
Second: You may need additional treatment to clear up excessive dead skin build up. You’ve probably already heard of Microdermabrasion and if you haven’t, don’t worry, I’ll give you the run down. Microdermabrasion is like a vacuum for your face that has proven successful in treating a wide range of skin issues. Microdermabrasion’s main use is to provide a great exfoliation. With the Carbon Laser Peel we killed the bacteria and removed some of the dead skin. However, you may need extra cleaning up of dead skin with Microdermabrasion, which is a no downtime treatment that removes dead skin, to provide a clean surface so that the P acnes bacteria cannot thrive in your skin.
Third and final: We need to make sure that you are backing up our clinical treatments with proper care at home. This begins with cleansing and exfoliation, and then the appropriate serums and of course a sunscreen designed for people suffering from acne to use during the day.
Of course, you can’t stop there if you want the best results. You will most likely need to adjust your diet. Your food choices will depend on what you are prepared to change as well as working out what food may be a trigger for your acne. Add lots of greens and power packed nutrients and antioxidants from the full colour range of other vegetables and fruit. Also you may need to reduce added refined sugars and fats and instead have oils in whole foods such as avocado, almonds, flaxseed, other nuts and seeds. For resistant acne you may need to consider cutting out all dairy. Get appropriate rest and exercise and have ways to deal with stresses in your life. Your acne may get under control by just having our treatments and home skincare but for many it will take a holistic approach where you need to change your diet to get a beautiful clear skin.
